Kiel  - Sailing City and excellent research

Gigantic ferries to Scandinavia, cruise liners from all over the world, Baltic beaches – all this gives Kiel its special maritime spirit. The city is known for a variety of international sailing events, first and foremost the annual “Kieler Woche”, the biggest sailing event in the world. The Olympic sailing competitions of the 1936 and the 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Kiel.

Three academies are based in Kiel: University Christian-Albrecht, University of applied sciences (Fachhochschule Kiel) and the Muthesius Kunsthochschule. Moreover a number of renowned research institutions are based in Kiel, with the main focus on marine and geosciences, medical sciences, nano sciences as well as economic sciences: the GEOMAR (Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel), the Forschungsanstalt der Bundeswehr für Wasserschall und Geophysik, the German National Library of Economics – Leipniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW), the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).

Kiel is the capital city of Schleswig Holstein in the north of Germany. Located at Kiel Firth on the waterfront approximately 90 km north of Hamburg, Kiel is home to  243,148 inhabitants, about 25,000 of them students.
