e:Med Meeting 2022
on Systems Medicine

At the end of November ‘22, after years of exclusively digital events, the e:Med community finally gathered for an in-person meeting at the DKFZ in Heidelberg. Over 230 systems medicine enthusiasts met for three days to discuss their latest research findings with their peers, to initiate new connections and renew existing ones. It was the first on-site meeting of the second e:Med funding phase and for many students the first ever – according to many new masked faces. The conference was officially opened by Dr. Nicola Scholz (BMBF), who kindly welcomed the scientists, expressing her interest in the achievements of the e:Med systems medicine community and in meeting the people behind the science. Professor Michael Boutros (DKFZ) and the e:Med speakers Professor Julie George (University of Cologne) and Professor Rainer Spanagel (ZI Mannheim) also gave warm words of welcome. Sessions spanned the spectrum of systems medicine technologies, bioinformatics, and modeling solutions to systems medicine of disease and translational approaches. Keynote speakers from the broad range of systems medicine, such as human genetics (Professor Markus Nöthen, University Bonn), individual specific networks (Professor Kristel Van Steen, KU Leuven), drug repurposing (Professor Harald Schmidt, Maastricht University), human immune system (Professor Muzlifah Haniffa, Sanger Institut) or tumor heterogeneity (Professor Stefan Pfister, DKFZ) and many more explicitly enriched the conference. Professor Bjorn Stevens (MPI Hamburg) gave “beyond the horizon” insights into climate research and modeling. Over 30 lectures on e:Med projects, 20 FlashTalks to promote the posters, a project group introduction, insights into the latest technologies from our sponsors, and a molecular disease board panel discussion characterized this inspiring meeting. The lively poster discussion at 80 posters was very well received - a part which could hardly have been realized virtually. Likewise, the integrated networking time with mocktail hour and conference dinner was very well attended and enjoyed for discussions. Dear e:Med Systems Medicine community, dear colleagues & friends, 

The e:Med Project Committee cordially invites all members and further interested scientists to attend the 8th e:Med Meeting on Systems Medicine to be held November 28-30, 2022 at the Communication Center of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. 

We are planning this conference live on site in Heidelberg and are greatly looking forward to meeting you there, if possible with the least but responsible restrictions due to the infection situation. Nevertheless, we know that the situation may require adjustments. In this respect, we appreciate your willingness to react flexibly to eventual changes.

This meeting will be an ideal forum for scientific discussions and for sharing ideas, results and information. Take this chance to meet your e:Med colleagues at this central conference of the systems medicine community!

With workshops followed by the official welcome speeches by e:Med, BMBF and DKFZ, the meeting will open on morning of Monday, November 28.
Topics of this year’s conference are: Technologies in systems medicine as well as Bioinformatic Approaches and Modelling. Sessions will further focus on Systems medicine of Diseases, a spotlight on Infectious Diseases, and Translational Approaches.
In the evening lecture we want to learn about algorithms and climate research and this open to the public. Keynote lectures by outstanding experts will give special impetus to the discussion. The program has moreover space for breaking news, e:Med project group’s PG networking, an e:Med community session, and company talks on latest technologies. 

Unveil your work to the community by submitting an abstract for talk or poster on the session topics! 
Distinguished abstracts with late-breaking topics are selected to be presented in a 15’ short talk in scientific sessions throughout the meeting. On Monday and Tuesday authors of selected posters will be given the opportunity to present a 2’ flash talk. All posters are exhibited throughout the conference. In addition there are two poster sessions in the exhibition area to discuss your scientific project with experts from the systems medicine community. The top three posters will be honored by the e:Med Poster Award 2022.

Join our Get Together on the first evening just after the public talk and enjoy the open atmosphere of the communication hall at DKFZ for chatting science with e:Med peers having mocktails and finger food accompanied by piano music. Another highlight is our e:Med Dinner Party on Tuesday night with live music. Food and Mockatils are offered to you for free, a contribution for alcoholic drinks is paid by participants.
