Heidelberg - City of Future and History
Heidelberg is one of the most popular cities of Germany. With its world famous castle, the romantic baroque style Old Town and the Neckar River it inspired not only poets and painters but still fascinates millions of visitors from all over the world.
Heidelberg is at the same time a thriving center of pioneering science and research with a truly international spirit. The Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg is one of the leading universities in the world and the oldest university in Germany, founded in 1386. Moreover the Academy of Sciences and numerous major international research institutions are based in Heidelberg, among them the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and five Max Planck Institutes.
Heidelberg City Facts
Heidelberg is situated where the river Neckar leaves the Odenwald forest hills and enters the Rhine plain, at 116 meters above sea level. It is around 50 miles (80 km) south of Frankfurt and 75 miles (120 km) north-west of the state capital Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg). It covers a total area of around 42,000 square miles (109 km2) and is home to some 150,000 inhabitants, about 17 % of them coming from abroad. Every fifth resident is a student, giving Heidelberg its very special flair.
